Project Title: Engineering yeast strains for biofuel production


Project duration: 1 July 2016 – 31 December 2017

Scope of Research: The research will focus on experimental work in the engineering of suitable yeast
strains for enzyme‐ and ethanol co‐production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and the production of biocatalytic enzymes using the Pichia pastoris expression system. In addition, the candidate will be involved in both extensive patent and literature searches to evaluate the novelty and feasibility of new genetic engineering strategies.

Host: The postdoctoral position will be integrated into a collaborative research programme between the Departments of Microbiology and Process Engineering at Stellenbosch University (see www.sun.ac.za/microbiology for more information on the Department).

 



Requirements
:

  • PhD in yeast molecular biology/biotechnology, preferably obtained within the past five years
  • Demonstrated research expertise in yeast molecular biology (e.g. research publications in international journals)
  • Previous experience in patent searches and interpretation will benefit the applicant.


Commencement of duties: 1 July 2016, or shortly thereafter
