Rhodes University and Citrus Research International (CRI) are offering an MSc opportunity in microbiology, focussing on investigating the cloning and expression of select baculovirus proteins which are planned to be used as additives to biopesticide virus formulations for improved pest control of the false codling moth, Thaumatotibia leucotreta, in citrus.

The study will involve a large amount of lab work, including PCR, molecular cloning, plasmid extraction, transformation of competent bacterial cells, protein induction and analysis. The study will also involve laboratory analyses of the effects of the target proteins against the host insect by biological assay.

The student will be located at Rhodes University in Makhanda.

 

BURSARY DETAILS

• A two year masters study, where performance will be reviewed after 12 months.

• A full bursary, including tuition costs and stipend, will be paid at a standard rate for an MSc study.

• An SA-accredited BSc (Hons) degree in Microbiology.

• Full Curriculum Vitae (CV).• Copy of degree certificates.

• A list of at least two academic references.• A valid South African driver’s license.
