Applications are invited from suitably qualified South African BSc Hons female graduates for a MSc position in the 2024 academic year, under the supervision of Dr Mariska Lilly (AMHBI, CPUT).

Requirements:
i.   BSc Hons Degree in any relevant life sciences discipline (Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology).
ii.  Demonstrated analytical/statistical abilities and writing skills.
iii. In addition, the candidate should have a strong academic background, good communication skills, and an ability to work independently.
iv. South African citizenship or permanent residency in South Africa.
v.  Full-time study commences immediately.

Bursary:
R 75 000 per year for 2 years, applicant can also apply for additional bursaries.

Project focus
Development of microbial additives for animals to promote health.

Aim:
The project involves the development of innovative microbial based products to promote animal health in a sustainable manner. The innovations can alleviate overuse of antibiotics in the agricultural industry, promoting sustainable farming practices. The propriety microbial formulations will be developed by screening isolates from the gut for various beneficial health promoting properties. Findings of this research will lead to the development of a host specific multi-strain probiotic for dogs.

The project activities include

  • Isolating beneficial bacteria from dogs and screening for probiotic characteristics.
  • Develop standard operating procedures to manufacture microbials at large scale.
  • Develop a probiotic product for dogs.
  • Purchasing commercially available raw materials.
  • Quality control to ensure that all ingredients are of high quality acceptable for regulatory approval.
  • Conducting safety and efficiency tests on the product formulations.
  • Conducting shelf-life studies to produce stable products for the market.
