We are seeking an energetic and motivated postdoctoral fellow who is interested in elucidating and better understanding host–microbiota interactions, and their effect on neuropsychiatric disorders. The successful candidate will work with a dynamic, multidisciplinary group of researchers in the Neuropsychiatric Genetics Research group. The candidate will be involved in, amongst others, the exciting SANeuroGUT project, which is the first of its kind in South Africa.

Experience in one or more of the following areas/techniques is preferred:
• Computational and statistical analysis of high-dimensional and multivariate data
• Generating, analysing and interpreting next-generation sequencing data (preferably metagenomic data)
• Analysing GWAS data

The candidate is expected to have published in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals in any area of the biomedical sciences.

Candidates will also be expected to:
• solve problems collaboratively and independently
• be able to prioritise and shift focus to other projects when required
• have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• work well within a team
• have a track record of collaboration with scientific researchers
• write and submit journal manuscripts
• perform supervisory/co-supervisory duties
• assist with writing/co-writing funding applications.

Requirements:
• PhD degree in microbiology, molecular biology, or related field, obtained within the last 5 years
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
• Track record of successfully performing appropriate bioinformatics analyses for a range of different projects

The fellowship is tenable for one year with the possibility to extend to a second year, depending on satisfactory progress. The fellowship is tax-free, provided certain conditions are met.
