Technical Assistant: 40 hours per week (1 year contract)

Duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Assist with research proposals
  • Write reports on specific projects
  • Set up experiments as required for all projects, execute experiments and gather data
  • Create systems for the gathering of data and the reporting of results
  • Assist with the management of research projects
  • Do quality control on research, perform laboratory duties and follow prescribed quality control procedures
  • Perform biogeochemical analysis of research samples
  • Preparation for sampling and perform sampling at mines and industries
  • Write standard operating procedures for new techniques / equipment

Inherent requirements:

  • BSc (Hons) degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Biotechnology or Chemistry
  • A good academic record

Required competencies:

  • At least 1 year experience on an industry-coupled project
  • Good writing skills
  • Computer proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to function with ease in the University’s parallel-medium and multicultural working environment

Recommendations:

  • Valid driver’s licence
  • Flexible hours
  • Willing to travel as dictated by project demands

Assumption of duties: 1 January 2017

Salary: R90 000.00 per annum

Duties and responsibilities
:

  • Directing research and development within environmental projects
  • Take a leading role in assuring the achievement of research outcomes (publications, patents, presentations, etc.)
  • Exploration of new funding opportunities and taking a leading role in writing project proposals for funding
  • Lead research projects and contribute towards student supervision
  • Perform rock, soil and water sampling on-site
  • Perform biogeochemical characterization of rock, soil and water
  • Design and perform all scientific experiments to gather knowledge from data in microbiology, chemistry, geology as well as direct research for (bio-) remediation systems
  • Design strategies for biological recovery of precious metals
  • Manage and monitor pilot-scale remediation systems
  • Compile reporting and results presentations for industry
  • Write SOPs for new techniques and direct new equipment acquisition
  • Create systems for the gathering of data and the reporting of results

Inherent requirements:

  • A PhD in Biogeochemistry, Microbiology or Chemistry
  • Proven experience in the presentation of papers / posters at national scholarly conferences
  • Proven national recognition for specialist expertise and research in a specific area of scholarship
  • A NRF rating or demonstrate potential for obtaining a NRF rating
  • Proven experience in supervision of graduated master’s students
  • A proven research record of relevant publications in accredited national and international journals
  • Proven experience of service as an active member of a national or international scholarly society, or committee or agency concerned with research at higher education levels

Required competencies:

  • Demonstrated skills and strong knowledge in microbiology, chemistry and geology
  • Demonstrated ability to scale-up laboratory (bio-) remediation systems, at the least to pilot scale
  • Demonstrated skill in biogeochemical modelling software (PHREEQCL, the Geochemist’s Workbench)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with micro-organisms in bioreactors
  • Demonstrated strong knowledge in bio-mineralization processes
  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge about synchrotron radiation (preferably μXRF, μXRD), physic-chemical analysis (XPS, XRD, SEM-EDS, ICP OES-MS), and microbiology

Recommendations:

  • Extensive knowledge of the domains relevant to the research program with specific reference to industrial waste (water) treatment, environmental biotechnology, environmental analysis and analytical chemistry
  • Experience in microbial-metal interaction and extremophiles
  • Proven network interaction with national and international companies on (bio-) remediation projects
  • Peer-reviewed publications in the field of (bio-) remediation
  • Proven site experience with at least pilot-scale plant design and development, site management and project management.
  • Clear evidence of academic outputs in a detailed CV

Salary: R 344 985.00 – R 428 040.00
Total rem. package: R 485 806.71 – R 590 349.74
