North-West UniversityBACKGROUND:
The successful candidate will join the Microbiology Subject Group of the Environmental Science and Management Research Unit at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University to contribute towards applications of Next-Generation Sequencing (microbial metagenomics, annotation of small genomes, transcriptome assemblies) in Microbiology or related biological field.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Use microbial community data including ribosomal tag sequences, shotgun metagenome sequence data, single cell whole-genome-shotgun sequence data and metatranscriptome sequence data from the Illumina platform.
  • Train members of in the Microbiology Subject Group in applying these methods to appropriate research questions.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publications.
  • Maintain an accurate and detailed scientific logbook of methodologies as well as data generated.
  • Provide periodic reports.
  • Participate in group meetings and seminars.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Recent PhD in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field
  • Experience in using computational methods, databases of genomic information and methods of analysis of biological sequence data especially next-generation sequence data.
  • Experience using PC, Mac and/or UNIX operating systems.
  • Experience in using bioinformatics tools as well as analysing and interpreting the data sets.
  • Experience in accurate record keeping and maintenance of data sets.
  • A proven record demonstrating the ability to write manuscripts for publication and present data at conferences.


TERMS AND COMPENSATION:
Compensation will follow university guidelines. The initial appointment is for one year but could be extended for up to two extra years.
